Outdoor TV Mounting in Australia – Everything You Need to Know
Outdoor entertaining has become one of the most popular home improvement investments in Australia – and increasingly, that means bringing the television outside too.
Whether it’s watching the AFL from the back deck, streaming from the pool area, or setting up a proper outdoor cinema in the alfresco, the demand for outdoor TV installations is growing rapidly. Done correctly, an outdoor TV setup is genuinely impressive. Done poorly, it’s an expensive mistake.
Here’s everything you need to know before you go ahead.
Can Any TV Be Mounted Outside?
This is the most important question – and the answer is no.
Standard indoor televisions are not designed to withstand outdoor conditions. Australian conditions in particular include:
- Intense UV exposure that degrades screens and casings
- High humidity in coastal and tropical areas that causes internal corrosion
- Temperature extremes – from freezing winter nights to 45°C summer afternoons
- Dust, insects, and airborne particles
- Moisture from rain, sprinklers, and condensation
A standard TV mounted outdoors will typically fail within months. The screen will fade from UV exposure, the electronics will corrode, and the warranty will be void.
You need either a dedicated outdoor TV or a fully weatherproof enclosure.
Outdoor TV Options: What to Know
Dedicated Outdoor TVs
Manufacturers including Samsung, LG, SunBrite, and Hisense produce televisions specifically designed for outdoor use. These feature:
- IP-rated weatherproofing – typically IP55 or higher, protecting against dust ingress and water jets
- Anti-glare screens – significantly higher brightness (often 2,000–4,000 nits vs 300–500 nits for indoor TVs) to remain visible in direct sunlight
- Extended temperature range – rated to operate in extreme heat and cold
- UV-resistant casings – preventing degradation over years of sun exposure
Outdoor TVs cost significantly more than equivalent indoor models – typically $2,000–$8,000+ depending on size and brand – but are the correct solution for any installation without a fully covered, weather-protected location.
Weatherproof Enclosures
For locations with good overhead cover (pergolas, covered entertaining areas, verandahs), a high-quality weatherproof enclosure can protect a standard indoor TV at a lower total cost than a dedicated outdoor TV. These are rated to specific IP standards and are available for most screen sizes.
Covered Alfresco Installations
If your TV will be installed under a solid roof structure, completely protected from direct rain and limited to indirect sun exposure, some manufacturers’ warranties permit standard TV installation in covered outdoor areas. Always verify the specific warranty terms before proceeding.
TV Signal for an Outdoor Installation
One of the most overlooked aspects of an outdoor TV setup is getting the antenna signal to the outdoor location.
Options include:
Running a new TV point to the outdoor area. A licensed antenna technician can run a new coaxial cable from your antenna system to an outdoor-rated weatherproof wall plate. This is the most reliable solution and provides the cleanest installation.
Using an existing outdoor TV point. Some homes have existing antenna points in alfresco or patio areas. These should be checked by a technician to confirm they’re still active, correctly terminated, and delivering adequate signal strength.
Wireless signal distribution. Some wireless antenna signal distribution systems exist but introduce latency, signal quality reduction, and additional failure points. For a permanent outdoor TV installation, a direct cabled connection is strongly preferred.
Mounting Options for Outdoor TVs
Fixed Wall Mount
The simplest and most stable option. The TV is fixed at a single angle. Correct positioning relative to the seating area is critical – this decision is permanent, so take time to determine the ideal viewing angle before mounting.
Tilting Wall Mount
Allows adjustment of the screen angle up or down after installation. Useful if your TV needs to be mounted higher than ideal eye level, as you can tilt it down for comfortable viewing.
Full-Motion (Articulating) Mount
Allows the TV to swing out from the wall and rotate. Most useful when the TV needs to be visible from multiple seating areas or angles. These mounts require more structural support behind the mounting surface.
Ceiling or Pergola Mount
For installations under pergolas or covered areas where wall mounting isn’t practical. Requires appropriate structural assessment of the mounting surface – lightweight pergola beams are not always suitable for the weight and leverage of a large screen in windy conditions.
Critical Installation Considerations
Cable management. Exposed cables on an outdoor installation are vulnerable to UV degradation, weather damage, and impact. All cables should be run through conduit or within enclosed cable management systems.
Power supply. A weatherproof outdoor power outlet should be positioned close to the TV location. Running extension cords to an outdoor TV is both unsafe and unsightly.
Structural integrity of the mounting surface. Outdoor walls, pergola posts, and rendered surfaces vary significantly in their ability to support the weight and torque of a large TV mount. A professional installer will assess the mounting surface and use appropriate fixings.
Height and viewing angle. The most common mistake in outdoor TV installation is mounting the screen too high. Eye level when seated should be at or just below the centre of the screen for comfortable long-term viewing.
Why Professional Installation Matters More Outdoors
The consequences of a poorly executed outdoor TV installation are more severe than indoor equivalents. A TV that falls from an incorrectly mounted bracket outdoors can cause serious injury or damage. Incorrect waterproofing at cable entry points can result in water ingress that damages both the TV and your home’s structure. Incorrect selection of outdoor-rated versus indoor TV for the specific environment voids warranties and leads to premature failure.
Mr Antenna’s licensed technicians assess your specific outdoor location, advise on the correct TV type and mounting solution, run all cabling properly, and install with the structural care that outdoor installations require.
