TV Reception Melbourne: Why Your Picture Drops Out and How to Fix It

Pixelated pictures, frozen screens and “No Signal” messages are frustrating, especially when you’ve settled in for the evening. The good news is that most TV reception problems in Melbourne have a clear cause and a fix. Here’s how to work out what’s going on.

Common Melbourne TV reception problems

  • Pixelation or freezing: the TV is receiving a weak or unstable signal.
  • “No Signal” on every channel: often a disconnected cable, a failed amplifier or a damaged antenna.
  • Problems in wind or rain: usually loose connectors, water in the cabling or an antenna that’s shifted.
  • Worse reception over time: ageing antennas and cables slowly lose performance.

Why one channel fails while others work

A common question is why one network, such as Channel 10, has reception problems in Melbourne while every other channel looks fine. Each network broadcasts on its own frequency. If your antenna, amplifier or cabling struggles with that particular frequency, only that network’s channels will suffer.

This can also happen after broadcasters change frequencies, or if interference affects a specific band. Sometimes an antenna that worked well for years simply isn’t well suited to one of the frequencies now in use, and a different antenna or a re-aim solves it. Before calling anyone, retune your TV. If the problem remains, it’s worth checking whether the broadcaster has announced any local transmission issues.

What causes TV reception issues in Melbourne?

Most of Melbourne receives its TV signal from the transmitters on Mount Dandenong. Homes with a clear view toward the Dandenongs usually get a strong signal, but local factors can still cause trouble:

  • Terrain: hilly areas and homes in the Dandenong Ranges foothills can sit in signal shadows.
  • Trees and buildings: growing trees and new developments nearby can block the signal path.
  • Interference: mobile phone towers and some household electrical devices can interfere with TV signals. A filter can help in some cases.
  • Distance: outer areas such as the Mornington Peninsula, Werribee and Craigieburn can have weaker or more variable reception.

Quick checks before you call

  • Check the cable is firmly connected at the TV and wall plate.
  • Run an auto-tune or channel scan.
  • Make sure any amplifier power supply is switched on.
  • Test another TV to see if the problem is the TV or the antenna.

When to call a technician

If the problem affects every TV, returns after retuning, or started after a storm, it’s time for a professional check. A technician will measure the signal at your TV points and at the antenna, then trace the fault, whether it’s the antenna, cabling, connectors, an amplifier or interference.
