What makes Smart TVs really “smart”?

Smart TVs make life more interactive for the whole family. From Netflix and Hulu to the ability to browse apps, and widgets, and play games, Smart TVs can almost do it all. With the advent of technology, it’s harder to buy a basic free to air TV now without smart features. But, what exactly makes a smart TV “smart?”.

The major feature separating smart TVs and regular TVs is an internet connection. An internet connection is primarily used to stream television shows and movies from a variety of apps and services, like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, YouTube, and many others.

Nearly all smart TVs come equipped with both an ethernet port and built-in Wi-Fi. However, some older models may require an adaptor to enable the Wi-Fi functionality. A Smart TV should be able to connect from anywhere in your house and your Wi-Fi should be fast enough to support all of the Smart TV features that you wish to use. Sometimes, however, if you plan on playing games or streaming 4K Ultra HD content, you might prefer to hardwire your TV to the network instead.
