How To Repair A TV Antenna System For Apartments

A manager called out Mr Antenna to repair the TV Antenna system in a block of apartments in Toorak today. The residents noticed random TV interference occurring in random units. Upon inspection and testing, we found a very interesting and unusual issue with the TV signal.

The UHF Matchmaster antenna was directed towards the city of Toorak/South Yarra to the COMO TV transmitter picking up channels 40-45. This antenna has a great front-back ratio, meaning it receives wanted signals from the front and rejects unwanted signals. It was still picking up a VHF signal from the rear of the antenna from Mount Dandenong – channels 6-12; picking them up quite well in terms of signal strength and quality.

The problem is that this particular antenna is not designed to receive VHF reception. In fact, the antenna does not point in the direction of the rogue signal. When it receives two sets of transmission signals, we refer to it as double stacking. Tenants will have two sets of channels “one set very reliably and the other set will differ from good to bad randomly”.

To rectify this issue we installed a bandpass filter that isolates the channels we want the system to receive. By eliminating the fault the tenants will now only receive channels 40-45 UHF and there is no more confusion, we also went through the whole building and returned all the tenants TVs. we really appreciated the view of the city while working on this job as you can see by the amazing photo.
