Common TV Antenna Problems in Adelaide and How to Fix Them

A TV that suddenly pixelates, loses channels or shows “no signal” is frustrating, especially when it happens during your favourite show. The good news is that most TV antenna problems fall into a handful of categories, and many have simple fixes. Here are the most common ones we see in Adelaide homes, what usually causes them, and what you can do about them.

Picture breaking up or freezing (pixelation)

Digital TV doesn’t fade out slowly like old analogue did. When the signal drops below what the TV needs, the picture blocks up, freezes or cuts out. Common causes include a weak signal, a damaged or poorly aimed antenna, or corroded connectors. Problems that appear in wind, rain or heat often point to a loose connection or water getting into the cable.

Missing channels

If channels have disappeared, start with a retune. If the channels don’t return, the antenna may be picking up a weak signal on some frequencies, or something in the system such as a splitter or amplifier may have failed.

No signal at all

A complete loss of signal often follows a storm. Check that the cable is firmly connected at the TV and wall plate. If that’s fine, the antenna, mast or cabling may be damaged, or an amplifier may have lost power.

One TV works, another doesn’t

This usually points to a fault in that room rather than the antenna itself. Likely culprits include a loose or damaged cable, a faulty wall plate, or a splitter that’s failing.

Problems at certain times or in certain weather

If the picture is fine most days but drops out in strong wind or heavy rain, look for a loose connection, corroded fittings or an antenna that has shifted. Heat can also affect older cable and connectors.

Adelaide conditions that make problems worse

  • Salt air: homes near the coast, such as around Glenelg, Henley Beach and West Beach, can see faster corrosion on connectors and fittings.
  • Wind: strong gusts can bend elements or nudge an antenna off target.
  • Birds: perching and nesting can bend antennas and damage fittings. Our guide to keeping birds off your TV antenna covers what works.

What you can try yourself

  • Retune your TV to rebuild the channel list.
  • Check that cables at the TV, set-top box and wall plate are firmly connected.
  • Switch the TV and any set-top box off and on again.
  • Make a note of when the problem happens, such as in wind or rain, to tell the technician.

Please don’t climb onto the roof to check the antenna yourself. It’s a job for a trained technician with the right safety gear.

When to call a technician

If a retune and basic checks don’t fix it, or the problem keeps returning, it’s time for a professional. A technician will test the signal at the antenna and at your TV points to find where it’s being lost, then repair or replace whatever is at fault. Not sure whether you need a new antenna?
